В статье на основе новых данных производится критическая переоценка вклада Ф. Барта в создание концепции этничности. Проведено сопоставление идей о значимости явления этнических групп, роли природного фактора для их существования и характере межэтнических взаимодействий Предисловия Ф. Барта к сборнику статей "Этнические группы и границы" и англоязычных публикаций С. М. Широкогорова об этносе. Учитывая более раннее появление публикаций российского ученого, сделан вывод о заимствовании норвежским специалистом его идей, без ссылки на первоисточники.
