In the article, on the basis of new facts, a critical reassessment of F. Barth's contribution to the creation of the concept of ethnicity is made. A comparison of ideas about the significance of the phenomenon of ethnic groups, the role of the natural factor for their existence and the nature of interethnic interactions of the preface by F. Barta to the collection of articles "Ethnic groups and borders" and the English-language publications of S.M. Shirokogorov about ethnos. Taking into account the earlier appearance of the publications of the Russian scientist, it is concluded that the Norwegian specialist borrowed his ideas, without reference to the primary sources.
