Abstract:
The article examines the phenomenon of Chinese vegetable farming in the USSR in 1988–1991. Using the materials of archives and oral history of Pogranichnyi district of Primorsky Krai, it shows that from the organizational and legal point of view, leasing agreements were the basis of agrarian production of Chinese brigades on the fields of state farms, although the farms' management hindered the development of this form of the economic relations with the Soviet employees. The author identifies governance techniques and discursive procedures that allowed to reduce the contradictions generated by the presence of Chinese brigades and to form in the district discourse a persistent image of the Chinese not as autonomous tenants, but as hired workers.
