The article deals with the formation of theoretical ideas about the state and, above all, about the nation-state in political science. Political science interpretations of the essence and evolution of the state are compared with the concepts of politogenesis developed in political anthropology and related social sciences. Based on the identified conceptual and methodological tools, an attempt is made to typify the states of the first quarter of the XXI century. and assessment of the prospects for their further evolution.
