State and Society Facing the Challenges of Ethnocultural Diversity: Regional Movements in the Countries of Greater Southeast Asia
Abstract and keywords
Abstract (English):
Despite the civilizational and cultural diversity of the countries of SEA, they managed to form stable international institutions and come closer to the embodiment of the idea of a common regional identity through the implementation of initiatives to strengthen intercultural interaction. At the same time, SEA retains a high conflict potential in the form of long-standing conflicts between state institutions and non-state associations. The work contains an analysis of research materials devoted to the problems of clashes and dialogue between state and civil structures regarding issues of regional identity. The review reflects both scenarios of successful counteraction by the state to centrifugal tendencies and examples of varying degrees of autonomization of regional communities. Based on rich factual material, the authors of the monograph highlight the political history of SEA, introduce readers to little-known cases of "rebellious ethnicity", and offer their vision of how the state can avoid disintegration and separatism, as well as destructive forms of regional identity.
