Between Village and City: Social Identity of Local Communities in Urban-Type Settlements in the Republic of Buryatia
Abstract and keywords
Abstract (English):
This article explores the features of social identity among residents of urban-type settlements (UTS) in the Republic of Buryatia through the lens of their everyday life. The main objective was to identify how, under conditions of social and infrastructural instability, the boundaries between urban and rural ways of life are intertwined. The study focuses on two case settlements: Onokhoy and Selenginsk. The empirical data were collected through expert and focused interviews (n=12). The study concludes that UTS represent hybrid formations where rural and urban elements of daily life coexist in a balanced manner, and social identity is shaped as a result of everyday experiences and spatial context.
